Counselling and psychotherapy are often used interchangeably, but they actually tend to differ in scope and depth. Counselling typically refers to shorter term, more goal-oriented support for specific issues or life challenges that are occurring in the here and now. These may be things such as a recent loss or bereavement, insomnia, relationship difficulties, redundancies or career changes, money worries, serious illnesses, sexuality, sex or identity struggles, weight issues or mild addictive or compulsive behaviours.
Counselling often focusses more on the way we think and explores the resulting behaviour which emerges from those thought processes. In a typical counselling session, as well as providing plentiful amounts of empathy, compassion and support, we would also help you to understand where these thinking patterns have come from and how they may be holding you back. This then allows us to work together and bring about positive change by looking at different coping strategies and practical exercises you may be able to undertake to help soothe yourself or resolve the conflict you’re facing.
On other occasions, counselling can simply be a space for people to let out their emotional turmoil. For example when facing loss or bereavement of any kind, there is sadly nothing that can be done immediately to minimise those awful feelings you’re likely to be experiencing. On these occasions, your counsellor will simply be there to support you in a non-judgmental, safe and nurturing space, allowing you to let out whatever emotions may be there for you and to talk about the often confusing and conflicting thoughts and feelings which accompany loss.
Our team of counsellors and talking therapists cater for individual one on one work as well as couples and relationship therapy sessions, CBT, Art Therapy, Creative Counselling and EMDR. Counselling sessions usually take place in one 50 minute session per week. Longer sessions can be offered for couples counselling if needed. You can have as many or as few sessions as you feel are needed, there are no minimum requirements or maximum restrictions. As your counsellor we promise to be there to support you every step of the way on your therapeutic journey, helping you gain the understanding and awareness you need to achieve the changes you desire. Your wellbeing will always be our number one priority.
